after midnight sunday. according to michael's mother michelle who i spoke to by phone the men were being driven home the driver got lost she says they asked to be let out and soon after they were jumped by a gang of men. michelle says her son and his partner were severely beaten, michael hall took the brunt of the blows to his face, michelle says during the beating a woman and her boyfriend came upon the scene stopping the attack, the suspects got away with a cell phone michael hall was taken to hospital where he under went surgery this afternoon hall is a well known local yoga instructor his friends and students have set up a facebook page and are also holding a fundraiser to help cover hospital costs friends say hall recently lost his apartment in a fire and has no health insurance. ryan. >> maureen ume tonight. the nation now knows the face of the man suspected of the deadly movie theatre shooting in colorado. the gunman, 24-year-old james holmes made his first appearance before a colorado judge he was wide eyed, seemed

african american university and two directors are here now the talk about that study. we will start with you what were the initial i guess, is it the over arching finding of the study that really you think is sort of worthy of doing the study in the first place. >> first of all thank you for having us today. we are one of six cityeight sites that participated in national institutes of health, hiv prevention study we looked at a cohort of 1500 black men who have sex with men. we were able to identify the number of new infections that happened in this cohort for the first time. this is a landmark study. >> chauncey when you looked at the research coming outs of this report did anything kind of make you take a step back and say wow this is interesting. >> absolutely the numbers we began to find within the study really highlighted that we are really faced with an epidemic here. mostly amongst our young men

who have sex with men of color p. it really just highlights the need for innovative new tools to really do research around these individuals. >> indc rates are high are there any solutions that came out of the study. >> i think we have really been collaborating to understand since this is the first, as you said landmark study as we move forward how can we look at structural interventions combine biomedical with truvada to highlight this issue. >> did you find a cultural stigma, perhaps attached with men of color having sex with men of color not using condoms in what is the over arching problem here. >> first of all it is what we identified in the study we take innovative community based culturally appropriate methods to address this epidemic in young men these methods we don't just have one tool we have many available we can look

at structural, community based interventions and types of looking for access increasing access and improving access to health care, sexually trance mated, treatment to testing and -- transmitted treatment to testing and a tool kit culturally appropriate for each person and community. it is really looking forward into what we can do next not just backwards but looking forward. >> is there a way, mania speaks at a higher level than a lot of us -- how do you break the culture how do you get into a monogamous or nonmonogamous relationship and say these are the things you need to do. >> absolutely as the face of the epidemic is changing so should our research, sort of how we become innovative with our research methods. as she was so earl cantily saying, -- eloquently saying, we move forward and change and
